In experiments under controlled conditions, I made the curious observation that nitrous oxide is produced in sterilized peat soils. Moreover, in live soils, nitrous oxide was consumed even in the most acidic peats. To test how prevalent these processes were in the natural system, I traveled to peatlands scattered across Central and South America for on-site incubations using isotopic tracers.
