Gonzen mine, Switzerland, 2011

The Gonzen mine, in proximity to the town of Sargans, has been closed for decades. However, microbial mats are growing at walls and afloat water ponds, carrying layers of iron minerals and being totally independent of sunlight. I studied one such microbial mat that was afloat a flooded mining shaft and associated with bubbles of methane gas.
